Evidence

‘He [Sir Charles Ryan] was a prisoner in the hands of the Russians for a short time, and spoke very highly of them and their treatment of him, but then, that was in 1877. He wrote a very interesting book on that war called “Under the Red Crescent.” ... My next big ship is an historian called George William Rusden ... He presented me with a copy of one of his writings called “Moyarra”, An Australian legend ... He also wrote a pamphlet called “The Great Refusal” It was a criticism of Gladstone’s policy in leaving General Gordon without relief in Khartoum. He had to withdraw this pamphlet from circulation. He lent me his own copy to read.- it was most interesting….He had a book in his pocket which he brought out, to show me. Its contents. There was an invitation to some Duchesses Ball in London – and also to Buckingham Palace.’
