<p>
<ptr target="ukred-31365">‘The idea is to honour all Mothers - I will take some mothers of the Old Testament - We will speak of Hannah (or Anna) the mother of Samuel she is described as a woman of a high religious mission - & a prophetess in her gifts -she sought from God the gift of a child - for which she longed with a passionate devotion of silent prayer of which there is no other example in the Old Testament - & when in ans.[answer] to her prayers - a son was granted - the name wh.[which] was given to him - & first introduced into the World - expressed the urgency of her prayer of entreaty “Samuel” - Meaning “The asked or heard of God” ... Rebekah - who was the wife of Isaac is another who longed to be a mother for 19 years ... You can read on in Genesis the story of Jacob & Esau - & the influence of the mother it is sad to read of her helping Jacob to deceive his blind Father – & we read on how Jacob had to go away - & his mother was punished - for she never saw her much loved son again - Then we read of Rachel - of her beauty, & the deep & devoted love of Jacob for her ... Another instance of the love of a son to his mother, was when Elijah cast his mantle upon Elisha…Elisha left his oxen in the field where he was working & ran after Elijah & said - “let me I pray thee, Kiss my Father & Mother & then I will follow thee” -
Then we read of the Shemamite [?] woman - who had made a resting place for Elisha ... Let us turn now to the New Testament few Mothers are mentioned - There is Elizabeth - & her joy at the birth of her son - St. John - who was to prepare the way of our Lord-
The model for all Mothers - is the Mother of our Lord - & yet we are told very little about her ... Xmas day - is the Birthday of our Lord as you know ... & we read how when He was 12 years old…she & Joseph returned to the Jerusalem & found Him in the Temple - & it is there He says</ptr>
