‘In reading the lives of the great men or interesting women of the 18th century we find them recording many “bon mots” of their friends - as a fact these people only went to houses where they knew there would be something good to hear. In reading Pepys and Evelyn & such men how very small our minds seem to have grown – one often hears Oh! So & so only talks shop – wh.[which] No doubt is pleasing to the one who talks but trying to the Listeners ...’
