Although Freiligrath had been 'a regular contributer to the London ""Athenaenum"" ' as Blunden notes,(see source text p.133) the context suggests that the book, found in an abandoned German dugout, would have been in the original language not an English translation. The actual dates of the reading experience are speculative and cover the priod of time spent between moving forward to the German front at Thiepval and leaving the area.
