‘In 1904 Midgley submitted a poem to the “Brisbane Daily Mail”, signed with the initials A. M., which was published on the front page of the magazine section. The poem “WAR”, included in his collected works, created much interest and resulted in an offer being made by the “Daily Mail” to contribute a weekly column entitled “For Sunday”. Whether he compiled the whole column is in doubt because his name appears beneath the poem only, but the overall contents of the column are such that one can safely assume they were collected and edited by Midgley. His first poem, “WHERE GOD SPEAKS” appeared in the column signed with his full name, and its publication brought with it an encouraging number of appreciative letters, which continued and increased in number over the two years of “FOR SUNDAY”’s appearance in the DAILY MAIL. The final poem, “GOD OVER ALL” APPEARED ON April 7th 1906, and was also the final work of Alfred Midgley written in his own handwriting.’
