‘Dear Sir, I write to you to speak a word of thankfulness. An accident threw into my hands the other day your small volume of poems – “The Repentance of Magdalene Despair”. Most of that fine flow of verse has given unmixed delight to me on a first reading though it strikes me as uneven. The first three verses on page 8 form a beautiful cameo of murdered innocence. I think the “federal song” in 22 almost perfect. I should take occasion to …in some early epoch. “Three Years Ago”, “Marion Mayne” and “Mary Magdalene” are ... productions imbued with the true creative spirit of poetry. Every one who adds as much as you have...to our common stock of genuine poetry is a benefactor to our kind, and I hope you will accept this expression of my gratitude for the enjoyment which your book has afforded me. I remain Dear Sir Yours faithfully Henry Parkes"
