<div type="chapter" label="Letter to Mrs. George Essex Evans from her son,Donald Essex Evans, 29 January 1918">
<p>
<ptr target="ukred-29106">‘Dear Mother,
….First of all we are having tons of rain and everything is wet. I think it is just about time they turned off the taps up above. What a terrible time they are having up North. Mackay seems to be in a terrible state and for all we know everybody may be drowned. Rockhampton seems to have got on alright and not suffered so much damage. I wonder how Uncle got on in it all I suppose he is alright where he is. Well I hope tonight"s paper will give us better news. “The Daily Mail” has a special correspondent up there and we get a full account of it all.
Mr. Hindmarsh gave me a cutting out of the “Sydney Daily Telegraph” of the 24 January referring to Dad. It runs as follows: -
“Sir Thomas Herbert Warren, Professor of Poetry at Oxford University, read an interesting paper on overseas poetry before the Colonial Institute. He said that Australian poetry is still largely open-air poems of action and movement. He paid tributes to Essex Evans, Arthur Adams, and John Sandes among the younger generation. Evans ""Commonwealth Ode"" he says, is a laureate piece worthy to live. Although he is startled by Dennis’s slang, he considers it is real poetry.” I will send you the cutting later…..I remain Your loving Son Donald.’
